Rakhi Gifts & Raksha Bandhan

Rakhi or raksha bandhan is celebratory of the brother- sister tie and it is one occasion where brothers and sisters come together to re-affirm their ties and exchange blessings and good wishes. The traditional practice involved sisters tying a sacred thread at the wrists of their brothers to protect them from evil and misfortune. In turn the brother took a pledge to protect his sister from all harm.

All over India, Rakhi is celebrated on the Shravana Purnima falling in the months of July and August. This year, Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on 30th of August. The festival is so popular among Indians, that Shravana Purnima is named as Rakhi Purnima.

There are various legends about the origin of rakhi, all rooted in the Indian mythologies . This festival, which falls in the Shravan masa (July-August) has come to be celebrated exclusively by brothers and sisters, though there are many legends connecting Rakhi to wives and husbands and gurus and shishyas.

Sisters buy Rakhi for their brother and on Raksha Bandhan Day tie them on the wrist of their brother praying for his success. Brothers on their part take a vow to protect their sister, and a symbol of his love gives a gift to his sister.
Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu custom marking the love and affection between brothers and sisters. It is celebrated on "Shravan Sud Poornima" every year according to the Hindu Calender.Raksha means Protection , Bandhan means bond. On this day, sisters tie a colourful 'Rakhi' on the wrists of their brothers. Sisters believe that this will bring success, peace, and good health to their brothers throughout the year.

Its also a time when brothers and sisters come together and share memories of good times . for those siblings who have moved away for reasons of work, or marriage it is also a time for reunion. Rakhi or raksha bandhan heralds a good time for all. The markets all wear a festive look and streets are littered with confetti. Colorful stalls sell varieties of rakhis in all shapes, sizes and colors.
Thalis ( ceremonial trays ) and gifts are in vogue during the course of the festival. When the day of rakhi dawns , the excitement reaches a frenzy . The sister ties the rakhi on her brothers wrist and performs the aarti( blessing ritual). The brother also blesses his sister and gifts her either in cash or kind. .
